After school last night I stopped at my parents' house for a visit. When I left their house I drove down the street, and when I got closer to the beginning of their neighborhood I noticed something.
There was a house that looked something like this:
And right next door to that house, a house that looked something like this:
Obviously these aren't the actual houses I saw, I just found these on flickr.com. But you get the idea.
The thought that immediately came to mind when I came upon these two houses was,
"Talk about battle of the holidays."
Then I got to thinking about how this happens every year. And honestly, it kind of bugs. A lot of people forget that Christmas doesn't come after Halloween.
Thanksgiving does.
Yes, that's right. There is in fact another holiday that comes before Christmas. And it's a big one, too. It is one that most of us look forward to right along with Christmas every year. It is the second of the three big holidays that close out the year.
So that means you get to keep your super cute fall stuff out for one more month before the Christmas decorations come out.
I have a lot of friends that get super excited for Christmas right after Halloween so they pull out all the Christmas music. Fine. But it's when the radio stations start forcing the rest of us who don't want to listen to Christmas music till after Thanksgiving to listen that irritates me. Yes, there are ways around it. Put in a CD, change the station...
But really, is it seriously Christmas time?
Nope. It's Thanksgiving.

I don't really want to see Christmas lights and blow-up Santas or Snowmen in front of houses. At least not till November 27th.
But a blow-up turkey or pilgrim would be great.

Frankly, I don't want to see a blow up ANYTHING! I hate those things. Super tacky! :P
Sorry to disagree with you, but I guess I'm one of those Christmas people. I have tons of Christmas decorations and only 1 or 2 Thanksgiving things. And there isn't really any Thanksgiving music to listen to. So once it gets cold, I have to look forward to the best part of Winter, which for me is Christmas! And I'm ready to decorate my trees!!!
Okay Miss Bah Humbug :) Here's the thing, I've been Christmas shopping for a couple months now. And there are not many Thanksgiving decorations. Don't get me wrong, I love Thanksgiving. But I don't mind the Christmas celebration starting a little earlier. Christmas is the only thing that gets me through the winter months. When it's cold, I have to think of the Christmas joy and the giving spirit or I just fall into a deep depression and want to stay in bed all winter. So if there are blow-up santas on my street, I won't complain. Actually, Kylee was in love with the blow-up witch and ghosts so I'm guessing she'd love to see a big santa.
OH my word, I couldn't agree more!!!
Thanks for posting that Al, I completely agree with you. You can seriously wait until the day after Thanksgiving to decorate. I mean the holiday is a completely different holiday! It's celebrated differently and should be decorated differently. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I think it's wrong to skip Thanksgiving as it has been the last few years. Celebrating Thanksgiving is a separate feeling then Christmas. We feel different on each holiday. So to put up decorations for Christmas and to listen to the music is saying you don't want the feeling of Thanksgiving. I couldn't skip Thanksgiving like that. Well said Sis. Love you! Can't wait for Thanksgiving!
Love this post.
I love Christmas and feel that I should have more than a month to look at my decorations. :) And because I have zero thanksgiving decorations. Sooo....hello Christmas! It might help that I don't like Thanksgiving anyway...I'm more of a Christmas person :)
Funny! I was actually thinking about this today.....but I was thinking I would put up my Christmas early.....because last year I didn't get them up until into December b/c of the wedding, so I want to get them up so when the kids come home we can kick off the Holidays.........But no blow up anything!
Okay, I just wrote an epistle of a comment and then my computer shut down JUST as I was posting it...So, in a nutshell, you are right on, girl! I couldn't agree more. I love Thanksgiving....maybe even more than Christmas. Just because it has such a good feeling about it without all the commercialization. And...I didn't read your facebook opinion on the calendar, but I take it you oppose it. Way to go. I feel bad for those who don't understand the gospel enough to see the harm in it. Anyway, too bad there are so many immature people in the world. It is your blog, afterall. And when they do things anonymously, just shrug it off because only a coward leaves an anonymous comment, in my opinion! (Sorry, it still turned out to be an epistle!)
I love you Camille!!!
How controversial! Like I said, "LOVE THE POST!" I agree with you 100%. I love Christmas, I have lots and lots of decorations, candles, etc... but really? People sometimes forget about Thanksgiving. It's not too hard to leave out a few pumpkins and fall leaves until the day after Thanksgiving. I always thought it was weird that in Idaho a lot of the radio stations start playing Christmas music after Halloween. What's up with that?
